Images for Alpha Sheep GeneticsAlpha Sheep Genetics was formerly the Southland Otago Romney Group (SORG).

The name change better reflects the change in emphasis members have made in their breeding programme.

Since 1971 members have been focussed on fast-track genetic progress and latterly have introduced genes from other breeds to meet the requirements of current and future market trends for meat and wool.

As a group we work together to provide linkages so that our sires can be compared in

Across Flocks & Breed Sil-ace Reports

We wish to make available to farmers the Alpha Sheep Genetics Sire Summary and Ram Selection List.

Total stock units farmed within the Alpha Sheep Genetics Group number over 100,000.

Research to improve sheep production and meat yield.

* The Ovita Lamb Survival Project.

We weight all lambs (dead and alive) and autopsied lambs that died within three days.

This identified sires and management to improve survival.

*   18 sires used by Alpha have been trialed in the Central Progeny Tests (CPT). Meat & Wool NZ.

*   Good results in the Romney New Zealand Saleable Meat Yield Project.

*    Genetic Control of Longevity - Lincoln University.

DNA = $$$

  • The rams you buy are a capital investment.
  • Dual purpose rams used for 4 years will have daughters lambing in your flock 9 years later.
  • Remember that 80% of genetic gains comes from rams used and that genetic gain like interest in the bank is cumulative.
  • Each new generation builds on the previous one and the benefits can amount to thousands of dollars in your bank.
